Apogee Users: Don Was
AD-8000 Talk about famous: Don Was has worked with everyone who's anyone, it would seem from his track record. There you'll find the Stones, Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Elton John, the B-52s, Iggy Pop, Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Brian Wilson and many, many more. The full list sounds like a Who's Who of modern music. "There's one piece of gear I love," he told Bill DeMain in an interview in Performing Songwriter magazine (Nov 2001, p46). "It's called the Apogee AD-8000. It's an 8-channel analog-to-digital converter. When you use the Soft Limit feature on there, it really gives a nice simulation of tape compression. It's not a simulation, really. It simulates the emotional quality of tape compression", he says. "Bob Clearmountain turned me on to Apogee," Was continued. "He was using these converters for mixes to DAT. I remember the first time I ever worked with him. I was mixing a duet with Bonnie Raitt and Willie Nelson, which are two pretty warm-sounding voices. His mix sounded wonderful. Then he told me he was going to mix to DAT, and I said, 'What are you talking about? You can't do that!' " "So we did an A-B thing," Was went on. "I brought in a half-inch machine and had it set up the way I was used to, and we blindfold-tested it against the DAT through the Apogee. And I picked the DAT. So that's a pretty indispensable piece of gear for me. If you're going to make records on your laptop, that's fine. But if you want some warmth, it's an enormous difference to have a converter like the Apogee." Since the interview was completed, Don Was has purchased a new Trak2. |
