Apogee Users: The Matrix
- Scott Spock
by Richard Elen The Los Angeles-based songwriting/production team of The Matrix consists of writer/producers Scott Spock, Lauren Christy and Graham Edwards. They've been working together for over three years now, and during that time have gained a great deal of success, with five songs and all of the singles on Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" album (including Complicated and Sk8ter Boi), three tracks on Liz Phair's recent album, a couple of tracks on Ricky Martin's new release, Christina Aguilera's This Year from the "My Kind of Xmas" album, and many other recent hits. Additional clients include the Backstreet Boys, Nick Carter, the band Lillix, and Ben Jelen. The team have a brand new studio in Studio City. When I visited The Matrix, they were putting the finishing touches to vocals with UK hit artist Darius - The Matrix crew have written and produced five tracks on his upcoming Mercury release. Apogee AD-8000s have pride of the place in the extensive equipment rack, with the recent addition of a Trak2. Lauren Christy - a former Brit with an impressive track record as an artist herself - took over at the computer to finish the vocals while Scott spent a few minutes to talk to me.
The Trak2 has been a great addition to the gear and they have been really happy with it." We're using the Trak2 with the FireWire card and the laptop sometimes with Logic. Otherwise, we just run it S/PDIF into the Digi002 to the laptop for Protools. Once again, in our main studio, it's been a nice addition to the preamps we already have, and we've used it on Liz Phair amongst others," Scott notes. "And I love the idea of having a portable system, a 1U rack-mount unit that does everything - including FireWire into a laptop - it's awesome!" he exclaims. "We work in a wide variety of fields these days," says Scott, "from rock, to pop, to rap, to R&B. We try to avoid pigeonholing ourselves into one genre," he notes. Almost all the Matrix's credits are for both production and songwriting, an interesting situation. "Virtually whenever we write something, the demo ends up being the master, and we end up producing it," he says. |
