Apogee Users: Jake Wherry
The Herbaliser’s Jake Wherry
and the potent sounds of Apogee's AD-16 & DA-16
On the indie/dance scene, the Herbaliser and their
8-piece band, have gained a reputation for amazing live performances.
Their resume includes the Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz
Festival, Glastonbury, Leeds, Reading, and many other big gigs.
Their successes and notoriety are not confined to the stage however.
The Herbaliser has song credits in Guy Ritchie’s SNATCH,
has composed numbers for Motorola, Archers Peach Schnapps, and
Footlocker ad campaigns and most recently penned the main musical
theme for ESPN’s Sunday Night Football.
"...people
were freaking out to the sounds coming out of my monitors"...
"we get ALL the bass we need coming back from the Apogees".

With these achievements comes the ability to score more gear.
Jake Wherry, founder and driving force behind the Herbaliser recalls,
“The benefits of some of our commercial success have allowed
me to improve my studio over the years, and that’s what
brought me to Apogee. Here’s the long story..."
"I got into ebay last year, and I started buying funk 45’s. Within
a few days, I had extended my search on ebay, to rare synthesizers, and
I ended up buying an old Minimoog. When I got it into the studio and recorded
a great sounding analogue bass part to my Mac, (thru my old MOTU soundcard)
I noticed in playback that I wasn’t hearing the same sound that I
had sent to the computer...Now, here’s the thing, everyone
knows that Pro Tools is the best way of recording on a Mac, so I got set
to invest in a Pro Tools Rig, but, after much research, and speaking to
engineers I knew, I kept hearing the word Apogee. I ended up getting
the Pro Tools Mix3 System, but rather than getting the rather dull sounding
888 converters, I got the AD16 & DA16 setup, with an ADAT bridge to
hook up to Pro Tools. Literally from the first tune that we started working
on in the studio, people were freaking out to the sounds coming
out of my monitors...needless to say the Minimoog records just
fine now, and we get ALL the bass we need coming back from the Apogee!”
