Mitchell Froom Does DAW:
Using a Trak2 as the heart of ProTools HD|3.

by David Boucher

Mitchell Froom's discography is both vast and varied having produced over 75 albums since 1985 including artists Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, Los Lobos, the Corrs, and Crowded House. With nominations for 2 Grammys, an Emmy, and a Golden Globe one must wonder what elements factor into his kind of success. Apogee got a chance to find out when Mitchell had to choose a recording system for his project studio.

"The mic preamps and DI are really great sounding and when it comes time to print mixes, the a-to-d converter with its soft limit is unbeatable."

“I prefer 15 IPS with Dolby SR so I’d love to have a 2” analog tape machine but then I’d need a full time tech and more space.” The next option was a DAW. “Everyone uses ProTools so I figured I’d stick with the standard, but I was aware of the sonic degradation when I had to use a ProTools system with the standard converters in the past. Until the Apogee AD-8000 came along I was never quite satisfied with ProTools as a primary multitrack, so I knew Apogee had to be a part of my new system.” The end result was a ProTools HD|3 System with an Apogee Trak2 at the heart. “The mic preamps and DI are really great sounding and when it comes time to print mixes, the a-to-d converter with its soft limit is unbeatable.” Engineer David Boucher explains the hookup: “We still use 44.1kHz for the large multitrack projects, but it’s nice to be able to go up to 88.2kHz for more sparse recordings like the upcoming release by Randy Newman that we’ve just completed. It’s only piano and voice, so the higher sampling rate really makes a difference. We use the Apogee AES8+ AMBus card instead of the legacy port to enable using the higher rates.”
