Apogee Makes its Mark at Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' Flyte Tyme

With five rooms of Apogee gear, the decision to add purple to the Flyte Tyme Production Studio racks is proving to be the great future investment it was projected to be. Recording and producing heavy-hitters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, with the help of their engineers Matt Marrin and Ian Cross, installed a total of 10 AD-16Xs, 10 DA-16Xs and 5 Big Bens across all five of Flyte Tyme’s production rooms. Each room features 32 channels of Apogee’s premiere A/D and D/A conversion and the revolutionary Big Ben master clock to sync it all together. Seven months after the opening of the private, fully featured studio, the Apogee name has lived up to their expectations.

Marrin, who records and mixes projects for Jam and Lewis, is also the Audio Technical Supervisor at Flyte Tyme. He comments on the Apogee buy, “Obviously after Terry found the studio, the next big decision was what gear we were going to get to make it the high-end studio he and Jimmy needed.” He continues, “I knew that Apogee made an X-HD card which would easily integrate Apogee converters with our Pro Tools rigs, so it was perfect. 32 in and 32 out with each room’s rig was our goal. We wanted a higher-end system like Apogee, and we were thrilled that we were able to utilize them with our set up. We have received incredible feedback from the engineers and artists who have been using them. With a Big Ben in each room, we know that the system will perform flawlessly and allow us the flexibility to add other digital gear as is needed. It’s basically bullet proof.

When a facility makes the decision to buy enough gear to outfit all of its rooms, quality and integration into the existing systems are paramount considerations for the long run. Apogee passed both those tests. Marrin explains, “We knew of Apogee’s reputation for quality, which was obviously an important consideration for us. But the main reason that we chose Apogees over any other converters was because they are an advantageous selection. The compatibility factor is what makes it more than great gear, but a great investment for the future.”
