B.B Barcus: Making an album with the Mini-Me... Anywhere

by Sean McArthur

B. B. is for busy, busy.
Well, not really, but he certainly is. Brent “B.B.” Barcus signed on with the first Shania Twain tour in ’97 to play lead guitar in a band assembled by uber producer Robert “Mutt” Lange. Since then he has continued his live gig with Shania (he’s currently out supporting the release of “UP”) and worked in between with the likes of Kenny Loggins, She Daisy, dcTalk and Michael W. Smith. He is presently in progress on the recording of the first full-length “Miley & B.B.” album, which promises to be a finely tuned rock/pop offering that teams B.B. with his wife and singer/songwriter, Miley. His challenge, aside from songwriting collaboration, playing guitar, programming, engineering…etc, is to get it done while on the road.

“I got the Mini-Me because I needed a way to continue recording while touring with Shania. So, I’ve been tracking in hotels all over the world,” says B.B. “I tried a few other boxes and they didn’t cut it. I wanted something simple that sounds great,” he adds. “I use a Titanium G4, Digital Performer, a Manley mic, an Oxygen 8 and whatever guitar I need.

"...the combination of great sounding conversion, mic-pres and compression is great because I don’t have to carry around three separate boxes."

The Mini-Me set up was so smooth. I just downloaded the asio driver and was up and running. With almost zero latency, it’s great for vocals or anything that passes thru it.” (Note that set up is even simpler with OS X v 10.2 and up with no driver required and even lower latency.) “The usb feature is just amazing. Being able to plug it into my laptop anywhere I am and be ready to record is essential,” he continues. “And, the combination of great sounding conversion, mic-pres and compression is great because I don’t have to carry around three separate boxes.”

As far as what he’s recording, we’re not talking about ideas and demos here. “Everything that I am recording while on the road is masters,” says B.B. “That’s why I bought the Apogee because I thought it was the only portable box pro enough to make masters on the road. Everything I’m doing is going straight to the record, vocals, mixes, all of it.” When he is able to get home, B.B. unpacks the Mini-Me and sets it up for tracking there too. “At home, in my studio I’m using the Mini-Me as well because I rarely require more than two inputs.”

B.B. is aware that along with all of the technical autonomy and capability that these new tools of the trade provide, comes the responsibility of being the “producer” of your own music. Through his experience with Shania and Mutt Lange, B.B. has had access to legendary know-how when it comes to making it sound good. “I’ve really been schooled in his world. He’s been a super heavy influence on me as far as crafting songs and commercial music. He really got me into doing it myself too and inspired me to get some gear and to not rely on other producers. It’s been very encouraging and empowering. And Shania, she’s such a great person to work for and treats the band really well.”

What's the next stop on the tour that is a rising career for B.B? "Well, the record is almost done. We’ve produced it independently and now we’ll look for distribution and then get out in the fall and promote it. My whole goal is too finish this record while touring with Shania so I can promote it simultaneously and use that momentum for Miley and B.B. We’re talking about building a little House of Blues tour around Shania’s dates."
