Do Apogee products work with the iPad Pro with USB-C port?

Apple’s iPad Pro with the USB-C port marks a significant change that affects Apogee’s iOS-compatible devices.

First some background:

Apogee’s iOS compatible products have been officially certified for all past iPad/iPhone/iPod models (the ones with Lightning or 30-pin connectors) by Apple through their MFi Licensee program. However Apple does not offer MFi certification for the new USB-C iPad Pro models. With this change, some Apogee accessory features will be slightly different on the new iPad Pro USB-C models.

NOTE: This information is only regarding connection to iOS devices (iPads & iPhones), and does not affect anything regarding connection to a Mac or Windows computer.

All versions of MiC & JAM and Groove – COMPATIBLE
These units will send/receive audio and all functions can be controlled via the knobs/buttons on the hardware or the buttons and sliders on your iPad/iPhone/iPod.

One/Duet/Quartet – *PARTIALLY COMPATIBLE

Basic functions of our larger USB units work. This would be audio playback, audio input, & output level control. (Note that ONE & Duet do not need the external power supply connected because the USB-C port provides bus power just like on a Mac!)

However these units are unable to connect to the Apogee Maestro iOS app, and thus are unable to access the Input Settings like Gain and Phantom Power or Output Routing and Volume.

Apogee will address the connectivity of the Maestro app with these devices in conjunction with Apple at a later date. A significant update will likely be required.

For now, if you need to adjust the settings on your Apogee ONE/Duet/Quartet it must be done with the ONE/Duet/Quartet connected to a Mac computer or Lightning iPad/iPhone first. Then you can connect to the USB-C iPad Pro and the settings will be retained so you can record the inputs.

Which Apogee interfaces are compatible with Windows?

  • Apogee Mic & Jam using the ASIO4All driver
  • The following Apogee interfaces are compatible using the Apogee USB ASIO driver and Apogee Maestro software (downloadable from this website):
    • Apogee Groove
    • ONE for iPad & Mac
    • ONE for Mac
    • Duet for iPad & Mac
    • Quartet
  • Note that these legacy Apogee interfaces aren’t compatible with Windows:
    • Duet Firewire
    • Duet 2
    • ONE revision 1
    • Ensemble Firewire
    • Symphony I/O Mk1 USB

What are the computer requirements for using Apogee interfaces on Windows machines?

  • Windows 10 Enterprise, Pro or Home Editions (64-bit) – Anniversary Update or greater
  • Intel i3 Processor or greater
  • At least 4GB Ram, 8GB strongly recommended

Question:

Do Apogee’s current USB products (Groove, ONE for Mac, ONE for iPad & Mac, Duet 2, Duet for iPad & Mac, GiO, MiC, MiC 96k, JAM, JAM 96k, Quartet) work with the 2015/2016 12″ MacBook?

 

Answer:

Yes. The 2015/2016 12″ MacBook includes a USB-C port. Since USB-C uses a different size port and connector than traditional USB ‘Type A’, you will need to use an Apple USB-C to USB adapter to connect any USB device with a traditional ‘Type A’ connection, such as Apogee’s line of USB audio interfaces, to this port.

Apogee’s line of USB audio interfaces are also fully compatible with the 2016 MacBook Pro, as outlined in this post.

 

*It should be noted that Apogee’s Thunderbolt products will NOT work with the 2015/2016 12″ MacBook.

Question:

Do Apogee’s current USB products (Groove, ONE for Mac, ONE for iPad & Mac, Duet 2, Duet for iPad & Mac, GiO, MiC, MiC 96k, JAM, JAM 96k, Quartet) work with the 2016 MacBook Pro?

 

Answer:

Yes. The 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar includes Thunderbolt 3 ports, which can also be used to connect USB devices. Since Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C use the same size ports and cables, you will need to use an Apple USB-C to USB adapter to connect any USB device with a traditional ‘Type A’ connection, such as Apogee’s line of USB audio interfaces, to these ports.

Apogee’s line of USB audio interfaces are also fully compatible with the 2015/2016 12″ MacBook, as outlined in this post.

Are Apogee’s products compatible with iOS 9?

Apogee strongly recommends upgrading the Maestro App when using iOS 9 with the following products:

  • ONE for iPad/Mac
  • Duet for iPad/Mac
  • Quartet for iPad/Mac

To upgrade Maestro, simply tap the “App Store” Icon and go to the “Updates” tab.  If an update is necessary, Maestro will appear on the list of Apps and you will need to tap the Update box to download.

Is my Apogee product compatible with iPad Pro?

YES!  The following products have been tested and are fully compatible with iPad Pro (Lightning port versions only):

Maestro on the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch shows v0.0.0 for ONE’s firmware even though I already updated it

There is a known issue with Maestro for iOS where it will display the firmware version for ONE for iPad & Mac as “v0.0.0”, even when the firmware has already been updated. The firmware update will still work on Maestro for iOS, so you can go ahead and run the updater, but it will still display the firmware as v0.0.0.  If the updater finished, that means the firmware updated.

 

This is a bug with the labeling in Maestro. You can double-check that the firmware for the ONE is up to date on your Mac by doing the following:

 

– Connect the ONE for iPad & Mac to your Mac via USB.

– Hold down the Option key and click on the Apple menu and select ‘System Information’

– Select ‘USB’ in the left-side column

– Select ‘ONE’ on the right-side USB device tree

– Confirm that the correct firmware version is displayed for ONE for iPad & Mac.

Apogee Maestro crashes when I launch it

If Apogee Maestro 2 is crashing every time you try to launch it, follow the steps below:

 

 

– Quit Apogee Maestro.

– Go to your Applications folder and locate the ‘Apogee Maestro 2’ icon.

– Click once on the icon and then hold down the Command key and press ‘i’ for ‘Get Info’.

– In the ‘Get Info’ window, check the ‘Open in 32-bit mode’ checkbox.

– Close the Get Info window and relaunch Apogee Maestro.

Why do I only hear the left output channel when recording with ONE or Duet in Garageband?

Note- if you are experiencing audio in one output channel only when using the CAMERA APP, please click here. The article below is for GARAGEBAND.

If you’re only hearing sound from the left output channel when recording with ONE for iPad & Mac or Duet for iPad & Mac in Garageband (or other apps), this is most likely because you’re using a stereo track when you need to be using a mono track.

 

If you create a MONO track in Garagband, it will send your input out both Left & Right output channels. When you create a stereo track in Garageband, it will hard-pan both inputs, so input 1 goes out only the left and input 2 goes out only the right. This is why you’re only hearing sound in 1 channel. Stereo tracks are typically used for stereo mic situations or if a keyboard has a stereo output.
