Duet FireWire FAQs

Q: I’m not getting any output from audio software applications.
A: If the OUT LED is flashing, the output is muted. Press and hold down the top panel encoder until the OUT LED stops flashing. Also, if the Maestro Mixer’s "To Hardware" fader has been set to Out L-R, then the "From Software" fader must be raised to 0 dB in order to send the output of a software application to Duet’s outputs.

Q: How do I reset Duet?
A: To reset Duet, press and hold the encoder until all of the LEDs on the unit are lit. All settings will return to their factory default.

Q: When I shut down my Mac, the Duet Out LED flashes. Is this normal?
A: It is normal for the OUT LED to flash when you shut down the Mac and leave the Duet connected to the FireWire port. If you would like to prevent the OUT LED from flashing, simply remove the FireWire cable from the Duet after shutting down your Mac.

Q: Can Duet be used as an Aggregate Device?
A: No, it is not supported to use Duet as an Aggregate Device.

Q: Where can I find more information about Maestro?
A: You can download the Maestro user's guide here

Q: When I press the encoder to select an input or output, all of the LEDs go out.
A: When 1 or more MIDI controllers are instantiated and selected for control by the top panel encoder, all top panel LEDs are turned off to indicate selection of a MIDI controller. If pop-ups are enabled in Maestro preferences, the MIDI controller selected will be displayed on screen.

Q: Can I set the headphone and line outputs to different levels?
A: The headphone and line outputs are always controlled simultaneously. To set the balance between headphones and speakers connected to the line outputs, set the speaker’s amplifier accordingly. It is possible to mute the headphones and line outputs independently.

Q: Maestro doesn't preserve my settings from the last time I used the Duet.
A: If you want your current settings to load the next time you use Duet, you must engage the preference for Maestro to launch automatically. By default, this function is turned off. To change this setting, go to the Maestro menu > Preferences. Check the box next to "Launch Maestro automatically when connecting a device."

Q: I’ve connected my guitar, but I’m not getting any input.
A: On the Level tab of the Maestro Control window, be sure to set the input to Instrument.

Q: When I press the encoder to select an input or output, the selection is unavailable.
A: When the inputs are set to XLR line or the output is set to Instrument Amp, the encoder is disabled and thus not selectable.

Q: What is the impedance of the Duet's headphone output?
A: The headphone output has an impedance of 30 Ohms.

Q: Clicks, pops, or intermittent communication with the Mac when using the FireWire hub of an Apple Cinema Display.
A: If you are using the FireWire ports of your Apple Cinema Display, try disconnecting the Cinema Display FireWire from your Mac.

Q: Is Duet hot-swappable?
A: Yes, you connect and disconnect Duet from the Mac at any time.

Q: I hear noise on Duet's output when nothing is connected
A: If you have the input gain turned up with nothing connected to that input on Duet's breakout cable, then you may experience some noise. If you are just listening to Duet's output and do not have any microphones or instruments connected, make sure you turn the input gain all the way down.

Q: Is it possible to daisy-chain Duet to an external FireWire hard drive?
A: Daisy-chaining Duet to an external FireWire hard drive is not support nor recommended. Daisy-chaining may cause overloading of the FireWire bus resulting in poor audio quality.

Q: How do I setup a low latency mix in Maestro?
A:

The Maestro mixer provides the ability to blend hardware inputs with playback from an audio application, and route the resulting mix to the hardware outputs for monitoring. These input channels on the left side of the mixer route signal from each hardware input directly to the hardware outputs. The From Software fader is where the output of an audio application shows up in Maestro. The To Hardware fader is where the hardware output is chosen. When To Hardware is set to a hardware output (any setting other than None), the mixer’s output is sent to the selected hardware outputs.

Before using the Maestro mixer, it’s necessary to change a few settings in your recording software. Because the signal to be recorded is monitored through the Maestro mixer, the outputs of software tracks actively recording should be muted. Most software applications provide an option to turn off software monitoring of recording tracks. In Logic Pro, for example, the software monitoring option is found in the same Audio preferences window used to select the hardware device (Logic Pro menu > Preferences > Audio). Uncheck the Software Monitoring box. In your recording software, set up a mix of all playback tracks and route it to outputs 1-2 (Out L-R for Duet). If a master fader controls the global output of the mix, it’s suggested to set the fader to 0 dB.

In Maestro, set the Input, From Software, and To Hardware faders to 0 dB. Set the To Hardware menu to an output. Now start playback from the session. The playback signal should be displayed on the From Software and To Hardware faders' meters. Use the From Mac and Input faders to establish a balance between the input and playback signals.

Q: What is the maximum load on the 48V phantom power? Will it handle any microphone?
A: Phantom Power on all Apogee products is designed to handle loads up to a complete short, or 14.1 mA. This will properly power any microphone.
