APOGEE WINS 2002 TEC AWARD AD-16 and DA-16 receive top honors in Converters category
Santa Monica, CA, October 8, 2002 — Apogee Electronics,
the leading manufacturer of award-winning external digital audio conversion
equipment, has received top honors in the 2002 awards, held last night
at, where the AD-16 16-channel A/D converter and DA-16, the companion
D/A converter, received the Award in the Digital Converters category.
The Award was accepted on behalf of Apogee by Lucas Van Der Mee, leader
of engineering the team that designed the units.
"This is the ninth time we have won a TEC Award since we started
in 1985," said Apogee's CEO, Betty Bennett. "We are pleased
that our conversion systems continue to be recognized as the leading products
in their field. The AD-16 and DA-16 have proved to be some of our most
popular units since their release," she went on.
Apogee's AD-16 and DA-16 converters are, along with the new portable Mini-Me,
among the most popular conversion systems that Apogee has ever produced,
offering 16 channels of high-quality A/D and D/A conversion at a very
affordable price. The two converters form the heart of Apogee's extremely
popular NativeTools bundle that includes Steinberg's Nuendo DAW software.
They are also the converters used in the new Pro Tools HD Upgrade Pack
, which adds Apogee quality to Pro Tools HD systems and has already been
a hit with Pro Tools HD users who require the quality that Apogee converters
offer.
Designed for the latest hard-disk recording systems, the AD-16 and DA-16
support the Sonorus S/MUX specification for sample-splitting of high sample-rate
audio data into multiple ADAT-style optical interfaces. Additional light-pipe
outputs are provided to deliver up to 96 kHz digital audio from all 16
channels in this mode. The AD-16 has provision for an optional AES or
TDIF interface card.
The AD-16 includes Apogee's industry-standard word-length reduction system,
UV22HR, for reducing the word length from the native 24 bits to 16 for
CD mastering, Internet audio and other applications, and SoftLimit to
maximize digital output level without overs.
The DA-16 'IntelliDAC' offers 16 channels of 24-bit D/A conversion at
sample rates up to 96 kHz. The converters can source their digital input
from either AES/EBU, ADAT optical or TDIF sources, and the unit can sync
to word clock or a specified input. The converter features a unique "intelligent"
two-stage re-clocking system, a first for Apogee.
The Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards is the foremost program
recognizing the achievements of audio professionals.
Presented annually by the Mix Foundation for Excellence in Audio, the
TEC Awards celebrates the individuals, companies and technological innovations
behind the sound of recordings, films, TV shows and concert performances.
The host of this year's ceremony was noted comedian and actor Harry Shearer.
Through its Hall of Fame, the TEC Awards also honors the pioneers of sound,
and, through the Les Paul Award, pays tribute to the musical artists whose
work has furthered the art and science of recording.
Through the generous support of the pro audio industry, the TEC Awards
also raises thousands of dollars each year to create awareness of the
problem of noise-induced hearing loss, and to further the education of
future audio professionals
