Apogee Launches “Mini-DAC” 192 kHz Portable A/D Converter

NAMM Winter Session, January 16, 2003 - New at the NAMM show from Apogee Electronics Corporation (Booth 6729) is the Mini-DAC portable 2-channel D/A converter. Second in a series of Mini products from Apogee, Mini-DAC provides AES, optical (ADAT, S/MUX & S/PDIF) S/PDIF Coax, USB inputs, and analog output level control. Also included with Mini-DAC is “digital-thru-mode”, a unique USB technology allowing the connection of non-USB digital devices to a computer/DAW.

Digital-thru-mode gives Mini-DAC users the exciting option of connecting virtually any 2-channel device to their computer/DAW via USB. And, the timing could not be better. “We are very fortunate to experience the convergence of our complete portable studio offering, (Mini-Me, a 2-channel A/D and Mini-DAC), with Apple’s much anticipated Core Audio. This will give users the connectivity options they have been after in a very low-latency environment previously unattainable,” says Betty Bennett Co-Founder and CEO of Apogee. Mini-DAC also provides USB driver support for Windows XP and Mac OS 9 (see Apogee’s web site for full support listing).

Another outstanding option available with Mini-DAC is analog output level control. Users can connect Mini-DAC to powered monitors or use the high quality headphone out for reference monitoring and playback, eliminating the need for more expensive or lower quality attenuating solutions. This is a great alternative to using a mixer that has become no more than a volume knob. And with Apogee’s legendary converter technology powering the output, mixing is made easier with a wider stereo image and truly faithful analog reproduction of digital recording.

Mini-DAC at a glance:

  • Stylish, compact & portable 5.5” x 10” (1/3 rack width, with a 1U rack-mount kit available)
  • Inputs include AES (single & double wide),Optical (ADAT,S/MUX & S/PDIF), S/PDIF Coax, & USB
  • Analog Output level control for direct connection of powered monitors
  • Low-current, low-voltage - ideal for location/ENG
  • Digital thru mode adds USB functionality to any 2-channel digital device including Apogee's Mini-Me, Trak2 and Rosetta
  • Support for OSX Core Audio and USB drivers available for Windows XP
